Book Drive: Lenten Social Ministry Project

For our Annual Lenten Project, the Social Ministry Committee is collecting books to support the Virginia Hospital Center Pediatric Clinic's pre-reading skills development program. They give a NEW book to children ages 6 mo-5 years at each of their well-child visits. Here are some general guidelines:

  • ABC, Number, Shape, and Colors books are always useful.
  • Please NO books with commercial or franchise tie-ins.
  • Books that are written to tell an engaging story with appealing illustrations are preferable to books written to convey a "message".
  • Please NO books on topics such as religion, death, holidays, divorce or medical issues .
  • Picture books should accurately reflect and affirm a diverse range of identities, cultures, and histories, and contain illustrations that are colorful and recognizable to young children.
  • All books should be in English.

In order to include titles from a variety of multicultural perspectives, here are some author and series recommendations: Vera Williams, Ezra Jack Keats, Matt de la Pena, Gaia Cornwall, Alexandra Penfield, Wong Herbert Yee, Jessica Love, John Steptoe, Innosanto Nagara, Ashley Franklin, Todd Parr, First Emotions series, Baby's Big World series or ask at your favorite local independent bookstore.

A box for Donations will be placed in the Narthex from March 2- April 17. Or you can make a check out to the church and put BOOK DRIVE on the memo line and we will do the shopping for you. Additionally, donations for the books for the Pediatric Center can be made online through the ‘Donate Now’ link on the RELC website.

This occasion is for all ages – please plan to join us!Social Justice Learning Group Upcoming Meetings

The Social Justice Learning Group (facilitated by Judy & Charlie Hughes) met on March 13th and will continue regular meetings after the service on the first Sunday of each month (next meeting in Room 13 will be April 3rd; all are welcome). A key discussion item will be social justice in housing.

The Bible in Christian Worship

On six Wednesday Evenings in the season of Easter, for an hour starting at 7pm, Gordon Lathrop and Gail Ramshaw will be offering an adult class on the theme of the Bible in Christian worship. The class will meet on Zoom. On April 27 and May 4 and 11, Gordon will be discussing three texts — Isaiah 25, Nehemiah 8, and Luke 24 — that have been important as sources for understanding the form and the meaning of the Christian assembly’s practice. On the following three Wednesdays, Gail will describe how our lectionary uses the Bible on Sunday morning. On May 18, she will focus on the Gospel reading, on May 25 the First reading, and on June 1, the Second reading. These classes will involve a presentation and then a discussion and questions. Bring your Bible and log on! The Zoom invitation will be included in the Midweek Message each week.

RELC Social Justice Learning Group + April 3, 2022 Meeting Summary

The Social Justice Learning Group met on April 3rd for a discussion led by Joe Ventrone on the issue of fair housing. Relying on his career-long involvement in real estate and housing policy concerns, Joe reviewed how US governmental actions (red-lining, neighborhood covenants, FHA underwriting rules, etc.) led directly to greatly imbalanced home ownership rates for Black citizens which have remained virtually stagnant over the past 50 years while the rates for other minorities (along with that of Whites) have all increased.

Further discussion among our more than 20 attendees involved racially disparate access to VA housing loans after WWII, race-based differentiation in home appraisals (highlighted recently in the Washington Post and elsewhere), the outsized impact of student loan debt on minorities seeking home ownership, the lack of affordable housing, and the general connection between historical housing discrimination and the current, widely-cited racial “wealth gap” in our country. There was general consensus that systemic barriers to fair access to housing represent yet another area where a full and accurate history has been relatively hidden from many of us.
We also discussed further future discussions on this topic with an eye towards possibly having a presentation available to the entire congregation.

The SJL Group agreed that our next discussion item would be about aspects relating to “education.” The Learning Group meets after the Sunday service in Room 13 on the first Sunday of each month – the next meeting is May 1st and all who want to learn more about social justice are welcome).

Recent decades have seen a flourishing of new songs and new texts for Christian worship. Many of these songs come to us from across the world, giving joyful expression to the global extent of the church. Others are new texts set to familiar tunes which feature voices not previously heard in congregational song. Still other hymns give attention to current theological concerns such as care of creation and honest lament. Join us for a hymn festival exploration of some of these new resources found in All Creation Sings, a new hymnal supplement to Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Led by the choir of Resurrection Church under the direction of Barbara Bulger Verdile, Music Director, and sponsored by the Music at Resurrection series. Join us on Saturday, March 26 at 4:00 pm. Wine and cheese reception follows the hymn festival in the parish hall.

All Ages Community Service Project, March 27

Dear Resurrection families: On Sunday, March 27th from 3.30-5:30, the RELC Education Committee is hosting a family spring service project to assemble snack packs for Arlington Housing Center (AHC) to be used for the week of spring break during their “career nights” study/learning sessions for their older students. If you recall, this will be similar to the service project we did this summer which was a lot of fun. From 3:30-4:30, (120) small snack packs (assembly style) need to be assembled and decorated with stickers on the deck of the parsonage. Tables/supplies will be provided and in case of rain we will have a tent or move indoors (wearing masks). A bag of healthy snacks will keep students energized as they attend career nights. Afterwards, from 4:30-5:30 the Education Committee will offer a liturgy event, a snack and cocoa by the fire pit. All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend! You are invited to attend all or any portion of this event.

New Songs for a New Season: A Hymn Festival – March 26

Recent decades have seen a flourishing of new songs and new texts for Christian worship. Many of these songs come to us from across the world, giving joyful expression to the global extent of the church. Led by the choir of Resurrection Church under the direction of Barbara Bulger Verdile, Music Director, and sponsored by the Music at Resurrection series. Join us on Saturday, March 26 at 4:00 pm. Try a Plastic Fast from Single-Use Plastics

During Lent, please join the Creation Care Team in our challenge to become more mindful of the plastics we are using daily and try to “fast” from using various single-use plastic products. Each week we will offer a new challenge to help you reduce your plastic footprint. Try them out! Even a small change can make a big difference!

Before you start the challenge, take the Earth Day Plastic Pollution Quiz to check your Plastic IQ and learn some new facts about plastic pollution. And just for fun, take a picture of what’s in your recycling bin. Then you can take another picture at the end of Lent to see if you notice fewer plastic items.

Challenge Week 3 – Prepare your lunch-to-go with less plastic waste. Try these tips:

  • Avoid plastic baggies for lunch items. Use reusable stainless steel, plastic, or glass containers
  • Pack a thermos.
  • Pack a cloth napkin and reusable cutlery.
  • Always bring a reusable water bottle.
  • Try to buy fresh fruits and veggies to cut and put in containers rather than buying single serving plastic products.

Join your in person life and your virtual faith community for a time of conversation and learning, eating and playing. On Tuesday, March 8th you can join Pastor Linman and Amanda Lindamood in studying the prophet Micah's call to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. All ages are invited to participate from 6-7 pm--bring your questions, your loudness, your faith practices and yourself! For the coming many weeks we’ll work our way through the whole book of Micah that we may come to understand in deeper ways the historical and theological contexts of this important prophetic work that this study may also enhance our understandings as a congregation in mission. If you are interested in participating, please contact Pastor Linman. All are welcome to join in!

Will You Commit to Financially Supporting Our Church’s Mission?

At our January 23 annual meeting, our congregation adopted a robust budget for 2022 – one that depends on the active and generous support of every member of the church. Thanks to those of you who have already shared how you plan to help meet our expenses and fulfill our plans for ministry and education – but thus far, only 49 individuals and families have provided that information and the intended offerings would cover a little less than 48 percent of the budget. If you haven’t done so yet please share your giving intentions for 2022 by completing the form that will be available at our Sunday worship services, or you can use this online form.

Bible Study on the Prophet Micah, Monday Evenings at 6:30 via Zoom

Because our aspirations as a congregation center so much on the wisdom of the prophet Micah to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God,” (cf. Micah 6:8) we are featuring a Bible Study featuring Micah on Monday evenings at 6:30 pm via Zoom.

A Gift for You—New Bibles & Small Catechisms

The Education Committee is distributing to households in the congregation new bibles and small catechisms for your use at home. These resources were selected to complement upcoming programming, and are additions to your personal libraries. To learn how to receive your copy, reach out to Amanda Lindamood or Pastor Linman by email. We’re excited to share these! Distribution and deliveries will continue through January into February.

New Songs for a New Season: A Hymn Festival – March 26

Recent decades have seen a flourishing of new songs and new texts for Christian worship. Many of these songs come to us from across the world, giving joyful expression to the global extent of the church. Social/Racial Justice Learning Group

The Group had a successful inaugural meeting on February 16, 2022 in the Parish Hall. Those present reached consensus on the strong need to continue learning more about this vital topic in order to better inform personal, family, congregational, and societal actions toward improvement. We also reached consensus on several logistical issues to carry forward:

  • We’re an “open” group – meaning that attendance is open to anyone interested in our learning goals. We envision regular attendees to provide continuity and to be accountable for contributing. We also envision and welcome congregants who may be drawn to attend when particular issues of interest are to be discussed.
  • We recognize the importance of regular, in-person meetings. We plan to meet after the Sunday service, typically on the first Sunday of each month (beginning 6 March at 11:30).
  • We agreed that our look at Social Justice should and will include justice concerns for all segments of our society (e.g., to include LGBTQ, Indigenous, anti-Semitism, etc.)
  • We agreed to each be accountable for continually learning on our own, noting and collecting current information on the topics in all sorts of media, and for recommending topics for study. Relevant issues can be found in our daily lives, in local/national events, and in virtually every facet of life.

The March 6th meeting will continue the discussion of the book White Too Long – The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity. After discussion at our first meeting, we agreed the book’s content and premise deserved further exploration. Whether you join our group or not, this book is recommended. Its author, Robert P. Jones, is well-known for annual surveys studying the intersection of religion and politics.

Worship in Person Indoors Continues

Our Reopening Planning Group has affirmed our commitment to continue to worship in person during the Omicron variant-related surge in Covid cases. Our modified worship routine includes attention to the following: reducing the amount of singing in worship, encouraging the use of N95 masks or double-masking, roping off again every other pew, and suspending coffee hour indoors for the foreseeable future. While we are committed to retaining our in-person worship practice, we also honor and respect those who, for varieties of reasons, need to refrain from in person worship at this time. We pray that this surge is comparatively short-lived.

Social/Racial Justice Learning Group Postponed for a Month

Out of an abundance of caution, we've postponed the start of the Learning Group that we've agreed to facilitate (from Wednesday 19 January 2022 to Wednesday 16 February 2022 at 7pm at RELC). We continue to believe that meeting in person (with appropriate distancing and masking akin to Sunday worship), at least to self-organize this new endeavor, is worthwhile.

In the meantime, we would encourage everyone (not just those who are considering joining our group) to avail themselves of the first resource we selected for initial discussion -- White Too Long, The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity by Robert P. Jones.

Altar Flowers Sign Up for 2022

In keeping with RELC’s custom prior to the pandemic, we have resumed ordering flowers for the chancel. If you would like to participate in flower dedications, please sign up on the calendar, which will be placed in the hallway just outside of the kitchen. Please be sure to inform the church office for whom the flowers should be dedicated to, preceding the Sunday that you have assumed responsibility for the embellishment of the Nave. There will be recognition of your dedication in the church bulletin. Please also note that you will need to submit a $40 check to the church office for the flowers. The check should be paid to the order of Resurrection Lutheran Church, and should include a memo which identifies that the donation is for the church flowers.

An All-Ages Bible Study, February 8

We had an excellent beginning recently when 23 persons of all ages joined in. This Bible Study will be led on the second Tuesday of each month via Zoom, designed to be paired with your dinner hour, and to engage all of the members of your household. We will build relationships, pray together in multiple ways, and respond to stories in our sacred texts through this creative new pilot. Pastor Linman and Amanda Lindamood will lead using our newly distributed materials, “Growing in God’s Love A Story Bible”. To RSVP, please This email address is being protected from spambots. Collection of Food Items for AFAC on Sunday, February 13

We will receive donations of food items for AFAC on Sunday, January 30, in conjunction with our regular worship service.

New Member Sunday, February 27

We plan to receive new members into Resurrection Church on the Last Sunday after Epiphany, Transfiguration of Our Lord, Sunday, February 27 as part of our usual Sunday worship. For those who wish to be received and for those members who may know of others who wish to become members, please This email address is being protected from spambots. Please Share Your 2022 Giving Intentions

Thanks to those of you who have already shared how you intend to support Resurrection’s plans for ministry and education – but thus far, only 42 individuals and families have provided that information and their intended offerings would cover a little more than 40 percent of the proposed budget. If you haven’t done so yet please share your giving intentions for 2022 by completing the Statement of Intent that will be available at our Sunday worship services, or you can use this online form. It’s also a good time to consider enrolling in the “Simply Giving” electronic funds transfer program to have your weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly offering automatically drawn from your bank account or charged to your credit card – just complete the enrollment form and return it along with your pledge.

Sending great thanks to all who partake in serving and glorifying God and RELC, through your gifts of flowers during the worship service.

Current Routine for Worship Indoors

We continue our worship indoors this Sunday at 10:00am. To alleviate any concerns and to help prepare you for your return, here is what you can expect:

First, out of loving concern for young children and others not yet able to be vaccinated, we ask that ALL worshipers wear facial masks. Secondly, we will maintain physical distancing, erring on the side of caution. These two basic practices serve as the foundation for safety and guide all other practices.

Upon arrival: kindly find your seats promptly on arrival to avoid congregating in the narthex. Every other pew will be available for seating. Please do not try to sit in pews taped off. Ushers will be available to assist you with seating options.

Offering: your offerings will not be collected. However, offering plates located near the front of the church are available for your use. When you come forward for communion, you may place your offering in one of the plates on stands near the chancel.

Communion: Holy Communion will be offered in both kinds, with bread being dropped into your hands, palms facing up, and wine administered from a pouring chalice into a container you bring from home. Intinction, dipping bread into the cup, is not permitted for reasons of hygiene. Communion will be continuous, with worshipers forming one line in the center aisle to receive both bread and wine at the direction of ushers. One side of the church will commune first, and then we’ll move to communing the other side. Return to your seats via the side aisles closest to you.

Upon Departure: kindly leave the nave promptly at the direction of ushers and avoid once again congregating in the narthex. If you wish to remain on church grounds for conversation, and we hope you do, please adjourn to the fellowship hall downstairs or outdoors beyond the Washington Blvd. entrance.

Misc. Considerations: Automatic hand sanitizer dispensers on stands are available for your use in several locations in the church building. If you forget your face mask, we have extras for you, and likewise small paper cups if you forget a container for communion. Worship indoors will be very similar to that which we have been doing outdoors, a simplified, somewhat shorter version of Resurrection’s normal worship practice.

We very much look forward to seeing you in church!
