Spiritual Education

Spiritual Education occurs in the fullness of the life of the church, not only in designated education times. Resurrection understands spiritual education as an aspect of faith formation, and we seek to provide creative, lectionary based, mixed age environments for learning.

Sunday School

All Sunday School classes follow the worship schedule; as a rule, on Sundays where one service is offered rather than two, Sunday School classes will not meet. This includes the first Sunday of every month, as well as select Sundays in the Church Calendar.

Unless otherwise stated, Sunday school for all ages begins at 9:30 and ends at 10:30 am.

Our Sunday school program for 3-year-olds through 6th grade, runs from September to June.  Our curriculum is based on the Lectionary and the Seasons of the Church.  This brings about great conversations when families discuss what the children learned in Sunday school and compare it to the readings and Sermon during Worship.

Our Sunday school program for 7th through 12th grade, also runs from September to June. Confirmation is held outside of Sunday mornings to allow for a joint Sunday School class for all middle and high school aged youth. Curriculum for this class is selected by the Youth Director as a complement to Confirmation with an emphasis on strengthening relationships, connection to the life of the congregation, and familiarity with Lutheran liturgy, social statements, and the lectionary of Scripture readings that coordinates with worship.

The third Sunday of each month breaks from other weeks in order to use a One Room Sunday School model that incorporates all Sunday school aged children and youth. An educational forum is offered for parents and caregivers at the same time that relates to a shared theme.

Parent Forum

We support the spiritual formation of members of the life of our congregation throughout the entire continuum of their faith journeys. With this commitment as a guide, we introduced a Parent Forum that meets once a month on the third Sunday morning from 9:30-10:30 am. This is a space to relate more deeply to the challenges and opportunities to relate to your children’s faith lives, as well as to deepen your connection to Lutheran theology, connection to Scripture, and prayer practices. Additionally, relevant topics are selected that are secular in nature in order to be discussed in the context of how the Church can be a resource in those areas; examples include mental health, listening skills, racial equity, healthy relationships, and responses to current events that affect families and the role of faith communities.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a dedicated period of spiritual education open to middle school students. Like Sunday School, it runs between September and June annually. In Lutheran Theology, we understand Confirmation as a process that prepares you to renew your affirmation of Baptism, and participate fully as a member of Christ’s Body in the life of both the congregation, and the larger Church Body. Throughout Confirmation youth are given an opportunity to examine what Lutherans believe about God, and to develop an understanding of their own beliefs and questions. Confirmation encompasses articles of our faith, but also chances to apply that to the needs of the world and one’s life. At Resurrection confirmation is a two-year commitment to participating in a class that meets two Sunday evenings a month. Classes include dinner and are two hours long. Confirmands that select to be confirmed after completing Confirmation will be welcomed in worship on Reformation Sunday in October. More details are made available to families at an info session held over the summer. Questions can be directed to our Youth Director, Amanda Lindamood, for additional information and logistics.
