Due to the pandemic the need for food is increasing daily. In addition, the annual Letter Carriers Food Drive (Stamp Out Hunger) which normally produces more than 50,000 lbs. of donated food has been canceled which makes the need even greater.
AFAC needs canned vegetables, cereal (low sugar), canned tuna, canned tomato products (stewed, diced, paste), and peanut butter (in plastic jars).
Contributions can be dropped off in the Narthex.
In order to accommodate a return to Sunday morning choir rehearsal, our one weekly worship service will begin at 10:00 am. Please note this change in worship time, approved by our Congregation Council..
We will receive donations of food items for AFAC on Sunday, September 26 in conjunction with our return to worship indoors.
On site in person office hours have resumed at Resurrection Church. Regular office hours, when Office Administrator, Monika Carney, and/or Pastor Linman will be in the church office, are Monday-Friday, 10:00 am to 2:00. Because there may be contingencies like running errands, attending meetings, or being called out on emergencies, it would be a good idea to call or email before you stop by just to be certain that Pastor and/or Monika will be available to you.
In keeping with RELC’s custom prior to the pandemic, we will resume ordering flowers for the chancel, beginning on Rally Day (September 12, 2021). If you would like to participate in flower dedications, please sign up on the calendar, which will be placed in the hallway just outside of the kitchen. Please be sure to inform the church office for whom the flowers should be dedicated to, preceding the Sunday that you have assumed responsibility for the embellishment of the Nave. There will be recognition of your dedication in the church bulletin. Please also note that you will need to submit a $40 check to the church office for the flowers. The check should be paid to the order of Resurrection Lutheran Church, and should include a memo which identifies that the donation is for the church flowers. Sending great thanks to all who partake in serving and glorifying God and RELC, through your gifts of flowers during the worship service.
It has been such a joy for us all to return to Resurrection for in-person Sunday services – not only for the opportunity to reunite with friends but to come back into the sanctuary and facilities that feel like part of our home. There’s a natural inclination to notice where some repairs and improvements could be made, and we are blessed with members in our congregation who are willing to increase their offerings to the church to accomplish those things. But we need to bear in mind that there’s a process for evaluating these renovations to our church facilities to make sure any projects are prioritized, fit within the church’s overall budget and plans for advancing our visions for mission and ministry, and don’t unduly impact other programs or activities. If you see a repair that’s needed or an improvement that should be made, before you think about “just doing it,” please talk with Pastor Linman, Property Committee chair Ted Mortensen, or Council President Glen Mason so that we know about it in advance and have a chance to ensure that it fits with other plans and renovations.
For families who feel the need to step out of the Sanctuary, we do have our lounge. Speakers in the space allow you to hear the service so you won’t miss anything. You will find a changing table and a couple of couches, which may be a welcomed sight for nursing mothers.
For those still unable to worship with us in person, we are creating videos of our Sunday morning worship at the church making them available later in the day on YouTube with links sent via a Constant Contact message. The Sunday bulletin will also be available electronically in the message as well.

We continue our worship indoors this Sunday at 10:00am. To alleviate any concerns and to help prepare you for your return, here is what you can expect:
First, out of loving concern for young children and others not yet able to be vaccinated, we ask that ALL worshipers wear facial masks. Secondly, we will maintain physical distancing, erring on the side of caution. These two basic practices serve as the foundation for safety and guide all other practices.
Upon arrival: kindly find your seats promptly on arrival to avoid congregating in the narthex. Every other pew will be available for seating. Please do not try to sit in pews taped off. Ushers will be available to assist you with seating options.
Offering: your offerings will not be collected. However, offering plates located near the front of the church are available for your use. When you come forward for communion, you may place your offering in one of the plates on stands near the chancel.
Communion: Holy Communion will be offered in both kinds, with bread being dropped into your hands, palms facing up, and wine administered from a pouring chalice into a container you bring from home. Intinction, dipping bread into the cup, is not permitted for reasons of hygiene. Communion will be continuous, with worshipers forming one line in the center aisle to receive both bread and wine at the direction of ushers. One side of the church will commune first, and then we’ll move to communing the other side. Return to your seats via the side aisles closest to you.
Upon Departure: kindly leave the nave promptly at the direction of ushers and avoid once again congregating in the narthex. If you wish to remain on church grounds for conversation, and we hope you do, please adjourn to the fellowship hall downstairs or outdoors beyond the Washington Blvd. entrance.
Misc. Considerations: Automatic hand sanitizer dispensers on stands are available for your use in several locations in the church building. If you forget your face mask, we have extras for you, and likewise small paper cups if you forget a container for communion. Worship indoors will be very similar to that which we have been doing outdoors, a simplified, somewhat shorter version of Resurrection’s normal worship practice.

Dear RELC Church Family:
The Council thanks those who provided feedback regarding the Black Lives Matter signs at RELC and concerns about the Black Lives Matter organization. We apologize for the lack of communications with the congregation regarding the Council’s decision to display the signs.
The Council agrees with the June of 2019 ELCA statement the “Declaration of the ELCA to People of African Descent,” which apologizes to people of African descent for the church’s “historical complicity in slavery and its enduring legacy of racism in the United Stated and globally.” Additionally, the declaration further proclaims: “this church enters into a season of confession and lamentation. Beyond empty promises or well-meaning intentions, this church recommits to the work of racial justice, socioeconomic equity and racial reconciliation.”
Bishop Eaton has joined many ELCA Lutherans in affirming Black Lives Matter. On October 7, 2020, the DC Synod issued a statement of commitment to racial equity. Among other things, the letter states: “We acknowledge the events that have transpired over the more than 100 days since the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. We witness the calls for justice, and join the many voices in declaring that Black Lives Matter are sacred.” The letter goes on to say “our silence only gives cover to racist policies, practices, and systems. There are no sidelines. Remaining neutral in situations of injustice leaves us on the side of the oppressor.”
The Council views the Black Lives Matter signs as a Christian statement that while all lives matter, at this moment Black lives are most at risk. The BLM movement was spurred on by the killing of Trayvon Martin in 2012 and has grown into an organization with chapters in cities across the US. As stated in the ELCA Black Lives Matter document: “The movement seeks to help people recognize that Black lives matter no less than other lives, and to expose how Black people have been and continue to be dehumanized and considered insignificant, expendable prey in our society… When we say Black lives matter, we are promoting and protecting human rights and living out God’s commandment to love our neighbor.” We know that we will never reach absolute consensus about sensitive decisions like these. In this time of Black people vulnerability to prejudice and harm, we feel called by Christ to announce our support publicly for Black safety and security, and our opposition to racial injustice.
RELC has historically played an active role within the Arlington Civil Society Community in advocating for justice and inclusion. The Council will continue current discussions on how best to determine the appropriateness of similar engagement going forward. The Council also joins Pastor Linman in the commitment to providing opportunities for our congregation to engage with each other in thoughtful and respectful ways as we seek racial justice in our church and world. Currently Pastor Linman is leading a discussion of Pastor Lenny Duncan’s book, Dear Church: A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the US, and the monthly Friday Evening Film Series. We hope that you will join us in these and future `activities and help us in expanding this commitment to racial justice.

During the sending rite at the conclusion of worship on September 12, and as part of Rally Day’s festivities, we will bless backpacks of school children to acknowledge a return to a new academic year and to seek God’s blessing on all educational endeavors.
The Education Committee, in partnership with other congregational leaders and committees, is happy to invite you to join us on Rally Day—Sunday, September 12th— for engagement in God’s Work Our Hands immediately after worship. Note this will be the first Sunday where worship begins at 10 am. We will gather masked and outdoors to participate in service projects together ranging from the following activities:
Stations will be set up to allow multiple ways to engage in service together, with opportunities for all ages to relate to God’s Work Our Hands Sunday meaningfully. As we transition into more opportunities to gather outdoors and in person, we hope you’ll consider joining us for this occasion for one or all of these activities.
But here is something you can do now in preparation for September 12th—Lutheran Social Services is helping in the resettlement of refugees from Afghanistan. The Social Ministry Committee is asking for your help to create boxes of household supplies for these families. We will collect items until God’s Work Our Hands Sunday/Rally Day on September 12, when we will pack the items and deliver them to LSS.
Items needed for Household Cleaning Boxes:
Gift cards to Target, Walmart, etc. are welcome or checks to RELC noted for LSS refugees.

The Social Ministry Committee is asking your help to create boxes of household supplies for these families. We will collect items until God’s Work Our Hands Sunday/Rally Day on September 12, when we will pack the items and deliver them to LSS.

Our usual team of videographers for Sunday worship are going back to college and thus are unavailable in church on Sunday mornings to create recordings of our worship service. We thank them once again for their many months of service. And we are therefore in need of a new team of videographers – adults, parents and middle and high school students – who are willing to be trained in our routine as we evolve from making videos of our worship services to possibly live-streaming our Sunday worship. The below chart is a summary of RELC’s finances for the year to date as of July 31, 2021. The columns titled “(a) YTD Giving,” “(b) YTD Expenses” and “(c) Giving minus Expenses” provide key data for our three primary financial funds.
This data shows that our general fund is currently running significantly below our actual expenses for the year and below our giving levels for this time last year. This trend has been worsening during the first seven months of 2021.

Long-time active member, Martha Simpson, died in Christ on Monday, August 23. She would have been 97 in September. Pastor Linman happened to visit her last Saturday to give her the gift of Holy Communion, a holy coinciding in Martha’s last days. Arrangements are still pending, but there will be a funeral in due course at Resurrection Church. Please remember Martha’s family in your prayers.

We continue our worship indoors this Sunday at 9:30. To alleviate any concerns and to help prepare you for your return, here is what you can expect:
First, out of loving concern for young children and others not yet able to be vaccinated, we ask that ALL worshipers wear facial masks. Secondly, we will maintain physical distancing, erring on the side of caution. These two basic practices serve as the foundation for safety and guide all other practices.
Upon arrival: kindly find your seats promptly on arrival to avoid congregating in the narthex. Every other pew will be available for seating. Please do not try to sit in pews taped off. Ushers will be available to assist you with seating options.
Offering: your offerings will not be collected. However, offering plates located near the front of the church are available for your use. When you come forward for communion, you may place your offering in one of the plates on stands near the chancel.
Communion: Holy Communion will be offered in both kinds, with bread being dropped into your hands, palms facing up, and wine administered from a pouring chalice into a container you bring from home. Intinction, dipping bread into the cup, is not permitted for reasons of hygiene. Communion will be continuous, with worshipers forming one line in the center aisle to receive both bread and wine at the direction of ushers. One side of the church will commune first, and then we’ll move to communing the other side. Return to your seats via the side aisles closest to you.
Upon Departure: kindly leave the nave promptly at the direction of ushers and avoid once again congregating in the narthex. If you wish to remain on church grounds for conversation, and we hope you do, please adjourn to the fellowship hall downstairs or outdoors beyond the Washington Blvd. entrance.
Misc. Considerations: Automatic hand sanitizer dispensers on stands are available for your use in several locations in the church building. If you forget your face mask, we have extras for you, and likewise small paper cups if you forget a container for communion. Join us on Friday, August 13th from 6 to 9 pm for the next Intergenerational Movie Night to view Sundance winning Smoke Signals.
We will gather on Zoom for an opening and closing session, each lasting 25 minutes from 6-6:30 pm, and 8:15-8:45 pm. The film runs for an hour and a half, and each household will screen it independently. You can view it with a Hulu subscription, or rent it on youtube, google play, Apple TV, direct tv, vudu, or amazon prime for $2.99. Our discussion will include reading stories by Indigenous authors, reflections on residential schools, reservations and climate justice, and questions about how to consider these histories within our faith communities.

This event will be outdoors, and require masks, with a rain plan to meet in the Parish Hall. Light snacks and drinks will be provided. We will gather on Zoom for an opening and closing session, each lasting 25 minutes from 6-6:30 pm, and 8:15-8:45 pm. The film runs for an hour and a half, and each household will screen it independently. You can view it with a Hulu subscription, or rent it on youtube, google play, Apple TV, direct tv, vudu, or amazon prime for $2.99. Our discussion will include reading stories by Indigenous authors, reflections on residential schools, reservations and climate justice, and questions about how to consider these histories within our faith communities.

Upon arrival: kindly find your seats promptly on arrival to avoid congregating in the narthex. Every other pew will be available for seating. Please do not try to sit in pews taped off. Ushers will be available to assist you with seating options.
Offering: your offerings will not be collected. However, offering plates located near the front of the church are available for your use. When you come forward for communion, you may place your offering in one of the plates on stands near the chancel.
Communion: Holy Communion will be offered in both kinds, with bread being dropped into your hands, palms facing up, and wine administered from a pouring chalice into a container you bring from home. Intinction, dipping bread into the cup, is not permitted for reasons of hygiene. Communion will be continuous, with worshipers forming one line in the center aisle to receive both bread and wine at the direction of ushers. One side of the church will commune first, and then we’ll move to communing the other side. Return to your seats via the side aisles closest to you.

Join us this Sunday, June 20 at 9:30 am in our outdoor nave and sanctuary on the parsonage side of the church for our weekly celebration of Holy Communion.
Communion is offered in both kinds using our usual baked bread and then wine being poured from a special chalice into the container you bring from home. You may want to bring your own lawn chairs or blankets. Feel free also to stay after worship for socializing and conversation.
We will receive donations of food items for AFAC on Sunday, June 20 in conjunction with our outdoor worship service on the parsonage side of the church.
On Sunday, July 4, the Sixth Sunday after Pentecost, we will return to worshiping indoors with one liturgy beginning at 9:30 am. We ask that all worshipers wear face masks out of respect for young children and others who are not yet vaccinated. We will also practice physical distancing. The routine for Holy Communion will be similar to what we’ve been doing outdoors, which is to say, we ask that you bring your own container to receive the wine of Communion.
It’s been more than a year since we’ve been together for our usual indoor worship services, and it’s not surprising that our separation during the public health emergency has had an impact on the offerings received to support the church’s programs and ministries. But it’s concerning that our giving is nearly $28,000 less than it was at this time last year – and the church has already needed to draw on its reserve funds to meet basic operating expenses. Looking forward to returning to regular services, we can also expect the church’s expenses to return to their higher operating level, too.
As Pastor Linman reminds us each week in our home worship video service, it’s important for us to remember the needs of the church even when we aren’t all together for our indoor services. As our “Simply Giving Month” draws to a close, Resurrection needs us to generously support its programs and ministries by using the “Donate” button on the Resurrection website. And the “Simply Giving” automatic funds transfer program also offers an easy way to designate an ongoing specific amount to be automatically contributed on a weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly basis. This Bible Study continues on Monday evenings at 6:30 and will meet for several weeks. Caroline Furnace is planning to open this summer for campers of all ages. Governor Northam’s staff is working with overnight summer camps in Virginia so that they will have every opportunity to be open this summer. Traditional summer camp sessions are available for kids from those entering first grade through high school. Family Camp opportunities are available each weekend.

Pastor Linman will be in Phoenix, Thursday, June 17 through Thursday, June 24 spending some time with Nathan, but where he will undertake his usual pastoral duties remotely. Pastor Gordon Lathrop will serve in Pastor’s stead as presiding and preaching minister on Sunday, June 20. On the 24th, Pastor will return with Nathan to Arlington where Nathan will spend the month of July into early August.

Join us this Sunday, June 13 at 9:30 am in our outdoor nave and sanctuary on the parsonage side of the church for our weekly celebration of Holy Communion.
Communion is offered in both kinds using our usual baked bread and then wine being poured from a special chalice into the container you bring from home. You may want to bring your own lawn chairs or blankets. Feel free also to stay after worship for socializing and conversation.
This Sunday, at the conclusion of our worship outdoors, we will offer prayer seeking God’s blessing on our community garden, our garden’s caretakers, and those who will benefit from its produce. Join us!
We will receive donations of food items for AFAC on Sunday, June 20 in conjunction with our outdoor worship service on the parsonage side of the church.
It’s been more than a year since we’ve been together for our usual indoor worship services, and it’s not surprising that our separation during the public health emergency has had an impact on the offerings received to support the church’s programs and ministries. But it’s concerning that our giving is nearly $28,000 less than it was at this time last year – and the church has already needed to draw on its reserve funds to meet basic operating expenses. Looking forward to returning to regular services, we can also expect the church’s expenses to return to their higher operating level, too.
As Pastor Linman reminds us each week in our home worship video service, it’s important for us to remember the needs of the church even when we aren’t all together for our indoor services. As our “Simply Giving Month” draws to a close, Resurrection needs us to generously support its programs and ministries by using the “Donate” button on the Resurrection website. And the “Simply Giving” automatic funds transfer program also offers an easy way to designate an ongoing specific amount to be automatically contributed on a weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly basis. This Sunday we will celebrate with Jackson, Trevor, and Angela Neeb who will affirm their baptism as their confirmation in the faith that joins us to Christ’s saving death and resurrection.

Please offer your prayers for the Metropolitan Washington DC Synod as we are gathered for our annual Synod Assembly, this year via Zoom, on Friday evening and all-day Saturday, June 4-5. The following RELC members will serve in various capacities as voting members to this Assembly: Maggie Mount, Leslie Nolen, and Tom Van Poole (lay voting members); Cindy Reese (Synod Council Member); Mitzi Budde (rostered Deacon); Amy Feira (rostered Pastor); Jonathan Linman (rostered Pastor). Thanks be to God for these Resurrection members who share in the work of our wider church.

We will gather on Zoom for an opening and closing session, each lasting 25 minutes from 6-6:25 pm, and 8:30-9:00 pm. The film runs for two hours, and each household will screen it independently. Our discussion will focus on cultural sensitivity, micro aggressions, and the role of family and friends as messengers and influences in how we understand ourselves and our experiences.

At the conclusion of Outdoor Worship on Sunday, June 13, as we are sent back into the world to feed the hungry, we will incorporate into our sending a rite to bless our congregation’s community garden, those who care for it, and the people who and organizations that benefit from it. As our “outdoor nave” is grounded in the place of our “Plot Against Hunger,” it’s a wonderful thing to claim this opportunity to pray for God’s blessings on our social ministry endeavors.
